Palm Oil Is Another Healthy Oil!
Now that food makers in the U.S. Have to label their trans-fat content, a number of them are making the switch to healthier oils like palm and coconut. I’m delighted to see this change for the better! I am hoping more corner store products continue this trend. Like coconut oil, palm oil has been mislabeled as bad for far too long, when it is really is a healthy saturated fat. Both oils have been staples in the diets of tropical folks for millenia, and have helped folk stay lean and healthy for many years.
Like coconut oil, palm oil is excellent for baking and frying, and is really stable and solid at 70 degrees, so it doesn’t need hydrogenation and contains no trans trans-acids. ( Trans fat is the bad stuff that you wish to avoid ) According to authors and analysts Sally Fallon and Mary G. Enig, PhD, of the Weston A. Price Foundation,’palm oil is a stable, healthy, natural fat composed from saturated and monounsaturated greasy acids.’ ( http://www.westonaprice.org ) Palm oil is the 2nd most used nutritional oil in the world, behind soy oil, and much more healthy for you than soy oil. Palm oil is redish orange coloured in it’s natural ( unprocessed ) state and a good source of carotenes and and one of the finest sources of vitamin E.
( it’s used by me when I cook fish, because my folks doesn’t notice the small flavour difference with the powerful fish flavour covering it. ) Processed palm oil has the flavour removed, but so are examples of the nutrient elements. But even then, it’s still miles better for you than soy or canola oil. I believe it is past time northern Americans see what the majority of the remainder of the world already knows, that changing to palm and coconut oil is definately a change for the better! Hence look for products which incorporate non-hydrogenated coconut or palm oil, or better make your own healthy nibbles with these oils.
