Refinancing Your Home Mortgage Loan

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

You’re considering refinancing your home mortgage loan to save money. Interest rates are the lowest they have been in decades. But, you’re asking yourself, “Is refinancing worth my time and effort. Can I really save thousands of dollars on my home mortgage loan?” The answer is yes. There has never been a better time to refinance your home mortgage.

Before you find a lender to refinance your current mortgage, there are a few key factors to know. It’s a good idea to decide how long you’re going to stay in your home, your current interest rate, credit rating and the value of your home. These are all very important things to consider before you refinance your home.

Refinancing your home is a great way to save thousands of dollars over the length of your mortgage loan. You could lower your monthly payments considerably. This will depend upon your current interest rate.

With today’s online mortgage companies, it’s easy for them to give you all the information you need. This can help you to get a lower interest rate, because these mortgage companies are very competitive to earn your business. You don’t have to run all over the place pulling credit reports and talking to multiple lenders. Online mortgage companies can give you quotes from many different lenders.

Refinancing your home with a lower interest rate can help reduce the term of your current mortgage. Your payments may stay the same, but the length of the loan and interest you save, can make it worth your time. You would have to lower your rate considerably for this to make sense. Good mortgage brokers can give you different ideas on what is best for your situation.

Taking the time to look into refinancing your home can pay off. If your current mortgage payment is $1,890 and refinancing reduces it to $1,790, the difference of $100 can add up. It’s a good idea to plan on staying in your home for at least 5 years for refinancing to make sense. This is because of the fees. If the fees are $2,000 and you plan on moving in 2 years, what would be the point? On the other hand, if you stay in your home for 5 years, in this example you could save $5,200 after the fees of $2,000.

With interest rates so low, it is a great time to refinance your home. Online mortgage lenders are now more competitive than ever for your business. Even if your credit is not perfect, you can still refinance your home mortgage. Now is the time to take advantage of the lowest interest rates in decades and save yourself thousands of dollars on your home mortgage loan.

Short Format Promotional Videos Can Be Brilliant for a Firm’s Profit Margin

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

You may well already know how necessary sharing your firm’s Web video clip is. For a company’s marketing manager, short format video commercials are a commendable resource that can effortlessly capture your potential clients’ attention and double the overall amount of users to your company’s website. Short format promotional videos are very good in attaining the target consumers’ comparatively short attention span. What’s more, if codes are integrated and online video sharing is endorsed, videos can be a great way to get one-way links and in so doing positively affect your web site’s position on the search engines.

In fact, short format professional videos have become an excellent source for business or self advertising. The following are a couple tips to circulating your own Internet video clips.

Firstly, you can post your online video clips on your own web site; but this would involve you to make your own video hosting arrangements. Ask your online hosting solutions supplier if video downloading or video streaming services are supported.

Video downloading is where your business visitors are required to download your online video to their computer hard disk. They need to store the video to their own workstation before they can play it using their PC’s video player or a downloadable video player software. There are numerous video downloading service contractors that cost not much. There’s also a progressive downloading mechanism where your web viewers can play the short format videos whilst downloading them. Vidify’s online video distribution partnerships ensure your video commercials generate awareness and impact within the right circles, fast.

While video streaming on the other hand absolutely does away with the demand to download the short format professional videos & permits instantaneous playback so it gives the most value to your Web users. Of course, getting a video hosting provider that supports video streaming can cost you a pretty penny.

Finally, the more trendy way to circulate short format promotional videos is posting your sites to video distribution web sites that have their very own video hosting infrastructure. These websites cost you nothing at all to become a member and will from time to time give you money post video content. What’s more, also have a huge audience base and reach; for example, YouTube receives about fifteen million visitors each and every month.

From the School of Pain to the School of Vision

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Many, many of us have struggled with some aspect of lack in our lives — not enough time, opportunities, food, well-being, quality relationships, education, money, friends, etc., etc. Whether we realize it or not, we have been using the pain of those “apparent” conditions as a very powerful teacher so that we may learn to know Oneness in God. Rather than allowing Vision to pull us into awareness of how beautiful, powerful, wonderful and holy we are, we have chosen to be pushed into that awareness through pain, believing that we are separate from the Infinite Source of all. Exquisitely tormented by the pain of not enough love, time, money and/or health we have been forced to resort to one or more of the following human solutions to our suffering:

• We create addictions to work, drugs, food, alcohol, or sex to numb the pain; or

• We live lives of quiet desperation, feeling like this condition must be the punishment we deserve for being such bad people, and hoping that by some miracle it will all go away; or

• We grovel around for yet one more solution we can impose that will “fix” the situation or make it better, such as changing jobs, trying one more health cure, divorcing our mate, etc.

Eventually, we will have exhausted any number of these methods and hit our wall. Feeling utterly defeated, we will know that the jig is up when we can’t haul our accumulated baggage forward one more step. Down on all fours under the unbearable weight of our “teacher,” pain, we can do nothing but wave the white flag of Truce and yell into the void, “I give up!” The end has finally come and we have no recourse but to “Let Go and Let God.” What an overwhelming time this is.

And what an enormously powerful time! Yes, powerful. Because it is only when our ego minds have run out of temporary solutions, avoidance patterns and rationalizations that the Mind of our Hearts can open to the Grace of God. Always there and waiting for an invitation from us, the Grace of God is truly the answer to our prayers and beseechings. When we embrace the Grace of God we are no longer forced to learn our life lessons at the mercy of pain, but we are open to living life guided by Vision and Inspiration. As one of my mentors taught me at a critical crossroad in my journey: “When you have nowhere else to turn, you are teachable.”

From the Low Road to the High road: My Personal Journey

I used to be a professional student at the School of Pain. For well over 40 years I believed that I was a helpless victim of my life circumstances and the lack of money. I was certain that I was being punished for untold sins, as I struggled to “make it” in the world. Pain became the professor in my chosen survival major — Finances. Convinced that I was helpless to solve the never-ending problem of too little salary and too many bills, I felt entirely justified in blaming my situation on all sorts of scapegoats. I claimed that I was a victim of the economy, my marital status, my sex, my education, my boss, my God (who had surely forsaken me). I held the belief that the number of dollars in my checking account defined my self-worth.

You can imagine how low my self-esteem fell during the financial ebbs of my life, such as the time when the ATM would not allow a withdrawal because my balance had fallen below $20! I also believed that all the dollars I did receive had to be earned by the sweat of my brow and that it was my lot in life to never have enough money. I just knew that life was meant to be a struggle, and then you died!

As I matriculated through the School of Pain I finally came to one accelerated course that had life-changing effects. A few years ago I found myself at the wedding celebration of my precious daughter with not a single dime to pay my way, much less contribute to her special day. Having to tell her and her wonderful husband-to-be that I had to renege on my promise to contribute to their marriage day took me down to all fours. “Oh my God,” I thought, “could I get any lower than this?” The shame and guilt I felt over earlier debt I had incurred, the bankruptcy I had declared seven years before, and the begging I had done from friends just to pay the rent all paled in comparison to the utter hopelessness and despair I felt on this occasion of the happiest day of my daughter’s life.

Reduced to ashes, I cried oceans of tears in the wee hours of that wedding day morning. “How had I gotten myself into this pathetic place?” I screamed from my inner pain-wracked self. I’ve worked so hard, raised three kids as a single mom and been a religious person — what did I do to deserve this? What am I missing? I spent the pre-dawn hours of that day submerging myself in my familiar victim mode of self-blame and self-flagellation. At one point in this vicious downward spiral, in a space between the torrent of tears and wails, I heard a soft voice say, “Be Still.” Startled, I obeyed and stopped my sobbing. “What are you grateful for right now?” the Voice quietly asked. “That I’m breathing,” is all I could answer. I felt the tiniest measure of calm inch its way through my shuddering body. “Will you surrender all your problems to Me?” the Voice asked. “And will you trust Me?” It gently inquired. “I have no choice,” I sighed. “I have nowhere else to go. I have tried every way I know to fix this endless financial mess. All I want to do right now is to enjoy being the mother of the bride,” I declared, feeling a little bit less hysterical. “Continue to be grateful and watch the miracles unfold today. Turn it all over to me and have a wonderful time,” the Voice said. “When you are grateful you open the door for My Abundance to flow into your life.”

That fateful, extraordinary day I summarily transferred from the School of Pain to the School of Vision. Little did I realize how easy it is to be accepted at this school and how welcoming it feels. I received so much support from others there that I never felt like “the new kid on the block.” And what a surprise it was to find everyone around me expressing their gratitude that I had made the decision to join them.

Attending this school guarantees every student a degree in listening with the inner ear to the Divine Plan for one’s life. Here we are taught through inspiration, intuition and imagination what our true purpose is. Here we learn to choose the high road to clarity. And here we hone the skills needed to express that clarity. By the time we graduate from the School of Vision we have recognized that the Universe is for us and that It truly works for our highest good. The diploma we receive certifies that we know with God all things are possible.

In the School of Vision my teachers have been many and my path one of joy and harmony, with only a few stumbles along the way. Through this new curriculum I have learned that what I was getting in life was determined by what I was giving out. As I gave out fear and the belief that there was not enough so was I receiving, with predictable accuracy, a life experience of fear and lack. It slowly dawned on me that I was using the Law of Giving and Receiving — “As you give, so shall you receive” — in ways that actually kept the cycle of lack going in my life. The many profound classes I have taken in the School of Vision have taught me to “give out” everything that I want returned to me, including money, laughter, healthy habits, love, compassion, peace, and harmony.

As You Give, So Shall You Receive.

The Happy Ending

It was on a cloud of profound Gratitude that I floated into the bride’s dressing room on my daughter’s wedding day — gratitude for the bride, my son-in-love to be, my two ex-husbands who were attending to last minute details, the sprays of beautiful flowers and corsages that had just been delivered, and the flush of excitement on my other children’s faces. Everywhere I looked I said, “Thank You, God!” God’s floodgates opened, the miracles poured forth and I received. Money was slipped into my hand by a wise and generous sister to pay for my hotel room. “Thank you, God!” An offer to buy my breakfast came from my loving son from across the table of 10. “Thank you, God!” An idea for the perfect gift to give the newlyweds that cost my time and my talent, yet would be priceless to them, suddenly occurred to me. “Thank you, God!” A request for my counseling services came from a guest among the crowd of friends and family at the reception. “Thank you, God!” And as I gave each prayer of Gratitude, I received even more from the Infinite One Source, God.

In the School of Vision, we are asked to “major” in 5 spiritual “Gifts” that when fully practiced will guarantee our graduation with honors. “Gifts” is an acronym for these transformational principles: Gratitude . . . Intention . . . Forgiveness . . . Tithing . . . Surrender. Why these particular “Gifts?” Because each of these “Gifts” has been carefully “test driven” for the power to shift consciousness. The ancient and modern mystics alike, no matter what their root tradition, have consistently referred to these five principles as essential disciplines in any spiritual practice. We have the power as spiritual beings to transmute the appearances of the conditions we see about us. In other words, we can use our inner eyes and hear with our inner ears and use those “senses” to see and hear beyond what is delivered by our sensory selves — our human be-ing-ness — to fully understand that we are beings of infinite possibility, unbounded by any appearance to the contrary.

The transforming power of these “Gifts” is that they allow us to move beyond the impoverished realm of appearances — namely, the data delivered by our five senses — and connect with the vast true wealth of Life that lies in the realm of the invisible, the place of Pure Potential and Pure Possibility. For example, when we are in a state of Gratitude even in the face of a painful situation, we are lifting ourselves “out of the line of fire” of that pain by choosing to enlarge our focus to the greater good (God) that is there, along with what is immediately apparent. This does not mean that we deny, minimize, or override the facts of our three-dimensional reality, but rather that we simultaneously affirm the greater Reality of which the three-dimensional is but a part.

It does mean that we have come home to the Mind of the Heart, the place where our intuitive wisdom — that “still small voice,” also referred to in the Bible as the Voice of God — resides. Here, guided by authentic Wisdom and Divine Intelligence, we cannot help but realize our greatest purpose and the reason we are here: to let God out! To BE the Abundant Divine Expression of God: “For this have we been called.”

Swimming and How to Stay on Top in Business

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

What else would I do first thing in the morning?

It’s 5:50am when I jump into the pool. When the cool water hits my body I’m instantly awake. Awake enough to think, “why do I do this? I could still be in bed! Am I crazy?”

Before you say “Yes,” I can hear you asking too, “why DO you do this?”

Why?

Because:

a) I’ve recognized a connection between my physical fitness and mental alertness,

b) because it’s a great way to start the day,

c) because living in cities, finding a pool has never been difficult and because

d) and this is the real reason – it allows me to eat doughnuts now and again!

But this particular morning was different, this morning I was to learn a valuable idea about business…

And it all started with learning. Many years ago, when I was three or four my Mum and Dad saw my first attempts to swim were an overhead thrashing action. They arranged for me to be taught the stroke it most nearly resembled. That was freestyle, or front crawl.

Ever since, people have told me that I swim well and ever since those days when I was knee high to a pair of water-wings there’s very little I’ve changed about my stroke. If I tell you that I’ve been 35 for over 20 years now, that’ll give you an idea of how long that’s been!

Shock! Horrors! Innovation strikes! Then one morning, not long, “Impact” – a health, fitness and lifestyle magazine – dropped into my mailbox and everything changed. One article addressed swimming: swimming crawl and specifically, recent discoveries about stroke effectiveness. Implementing those changes let to two discoveries:

1) By amending three aspects of my technique my stroke rate was cut from 19 to 20 per length to a consistent 15-16… without any reduction in speed. However I play with those stats I can’t make that less than a 20% improvement.

2) Even more interesting, the changes specifically contradicted the best practices which I had learned all those years ago, practices which had been reinforced during my High School years on the swimming team.

A new idea is born: And this is what hit me like the unheated waters of a cold pool on a hot day: how many of us are doing “the same old, same old” as our son Marcus says, without paying any attention to what the universe has been teaching others in the meantime? More to the point, what can you do?

What will you do next? What are the “same old, same olds” which are handicapping your progress? Here, in random order, are a few ideas which I hope will stimulate 20% better performance by you and your organisation and help you achieve the ultimate accolade of being considered a Sustainable Workplace:

1) Look at the most successful of your competitors to see what they are doing differently from you.

2) If you’re involved in manufacturing, look at your machinery and discover all the innovations made by the maker since its acquisition. If subsequent improvements have increased the output of the latest models by 100% while consuming half as much energy, perhaps you’d better do some financial projections!

3) If you’re involved in manufacturing, walk around your plant looking for piles of part-completed product, bottlenecks representing opportunities for increased productivity. Has new machinery generated different bottlenecks, somewhere else, since the last time you noticed? (PS Read Eli Goldratt’s “The Goal” and see how that affects your productivity!)

4) Review the statistics: the staff retention rates of each of your managers, absenteeism, productivity trends, profitability trends, the degree to which your people are happy at work etc. How have they changed?
(Did know there is a direct connection between your people’s perception of YOUR workplace and YOUR profitability, productivity, staff retention, and customer loyalty?)

5) On which client are you spending vast amounts of time in return for no business at all?

6) How well are you looking after yourself? Look for your emotional hot-buttons and take steps to neutralize them so you and not your emotions are in control, both in and outside of business.

7) Continue the list here, with your own ideas!

My challenge to you today and all that came from jumping into the swimming pool! Make sure that in your area, you and your company not only ‘keep in the swim’ but lead it. The best way to do that is to ensure that nothing, but nothing, becomes the “same old, same old” ever again. Take some time to sit down TODAY and create your own list of everything you are taking for granted, overlooking. Don’t just sit anywhere, go where you will not be disturbed where the view is good, where your wellness and creativity are fed, but do it and do it today!

…and if you would like more questions, email me!

School Scholarships for Southpaws

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Searching for help to finance degree courses may be problematic and can certainly need time. Scholarships are not the same as a student loan because the funds are a grant, so it does not have to be paid back. While exploring methods to finance a degree, bear in mind that funds are accessible at truly unlikely sites, such as lefty scholarships.

We do suggest you go to this really useful source for vegan scholarships helping vegetarians pursue higher education ideas!

Funding for Left Handers: It may appear a little crazy to extend a scholarship based on a predominant hand, however it’s worth looking at this: Bill Gates is left handed, as is Barack Obama. Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Ringo Starr and were also southpaws. Approximately eleven percent of the population are left handed. Although in the past left handers have experienced substantial discrimination, today they are frequently believed to be more intelligent and more artistic. Today, lefties are no longer stigmatised or thought of as odd, in fact they may even be associated with the many great individuals noted above.

If you are a southpaw and exploring scholarships specifically for southpaw students, plenty of grants for lefthanded individuals exist which you could receive. A Beckley Scholarship for funding up to $1,000 is presently available at Juniata College in Huntington, Pennsylvania. Presented to scholars of Juniata College and set up in 1979, this particular bursary helps many southpaws in their pursuit for further education. Some scholarships do have requirements and limitations. These may include grades or monetary needs. Multiple program applications may give you a greater opportunity of financing a college degree with as small a school debt upon graduation as possible. Societies, hobby related groups and community organizations can be a source of scholarships. Grants for left-handed scholars are not the only case; funds are likewise obtainable if you are a child of a from a military home or suffer from a disability, to offer some examples. Many people have to invest some time exploring funding, even so the advantages may be sizable. Any debt accrued by a university degree may be diminished by such funds utilised alongside a regular student loan. Leave no stone unturned and research each scholarship. The above-mentioned funding is not the only alternative – look at your local associations and remember to utilize your resourcefulness. Apply for everything you imagine you are suitable for, keeping any costs to a an absolute minimum, additionally you’ll be able to expect better prospects on graduation.

Finding A Quality (And Affordable) Web Host

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Your web host is the company that actually houses your website.
While it is possible to host your own website using a computer
in your home or office, it is cheaper and easier for new website
owners to work with an established web hosting company. When
choosing your web hosting company, you should consider three
issues:

  • Price – Generally speaking you should be
able to find a good shared hosting plan for somewhere between $5
    and $30 per month.
  • Hosting Technologies – There are
different types of server technologies, and a number of “add-on”
software products that some web hosting companies bundle into
their offerings. Generally speaking, the more software that is
included in your plan, the higher the price for your hosting
    services.
  • Support – Depending on your level of
sophistication in dealing with web technologies, you may want to
consider paying a bit extra for a hosting company that provides
better support packages. Of course, if you have a friend or
family member that has skills in this area, or you are planning
to hire a custom website designer or developer, then you can
probably forgo paying extra for support.

When you are starting out with a new website, your primary
concern with a web hosting company is going to be price. You do
not need to pay a lot of money for extra bandwidth or other
frills. By the time you need extra bandwidth, you will have the
income stream to pay for it.

Web Hosting Technologies

Your primary concern with web hosting technologies is to make
sure that the host you select supports the software you plan to
use to create and serve your web pages. You will also need to
make sure that any additional functionality you wish to include
in your website is supported by the hosting company.

  • Server Technologies – You will need to make sure that your
hosting company supports whatever server technologies you will
require for your site. For new site owners this is usually not
an issue since your web pages will be programmed in HTML that is
supported by all web-serving technologies. However, if you are
hiring a contract web developer to create a database-driven web
application using PHP, ASP, JSP, or ColdFusion, then you should
make sure your hosting company supports whatever language your
developer is using. If you have questions, you can probably have
them answered by the sales or support line for your prospective
    hosting company.
  • Development Technologies – If you are using
Microsoft FrontPage to develop your website, then you will need
to select a web hosting company that supports FrontPage
extensions. If you are unsure about whether your web host
supports your development software, then the sales
representative or support line should be able to answer your
    questions.
  • E-commerce/Shopping Cart System – If you plan to
sell products on your website, then you will want to select a
web hosting company that offers a shopping cart system. Most
shopping cart systems are customizable for your website.
However, you may want to hire a seasoned developer to handle
implementing your system to make sure everything goes smoothly.

  • CGI/Perl Scripts – The most useful CGI script for new
websites is for creating “email forms”. These allow you to
collect information from your users via web forms and send it to
yourself via email without paying the premiums required for
developing a database driven website. Some hosting companies
offer these scripts, while others do not. It is generally
recommended to work with hosting companies that support these
types of forms because collecting information from users is one
of the primary purposes of most websites.

Different
Ways of Hosting Your Site

It is generally recommended that you purchase web hosting from
an established web hosting company. There are, however, several
options for web hosting.

  • Shared Hosting – This is the
recommended starting point for most websites. With a shared
hosting plan, your site shares a server with a number of other
sites. By far the cheapest way to get a site started, shared
hosting is ideal for low-volume, low-bandwidth sites. Pricing
for these types of plans can be anywhere from about $5 to $30
per month. You have zero involvement in maintaining the server
or it’s software. All you have to worry about is your website.
The negatives about Shared Hosting are that you are limited in
bandwidth, and you are potentially affected by other web sites
on the server. If one of the other sites on the server suddenly
received a lot of traffic, your site’s performance will be
affected. It should be noted, however, that this is rarely a
    problem for most hosts.
  • Dedicated Web Server – Once your
site starts getting a significant volume of traffic (i.e. more
than 3,000 unique visitors per day), you may want to think about
moving up to a Dedicated Web Server. This is where your site is
the only site on the server. The benefits of this sort of server
are that you can generally specify what software is loaded onto
the machine, you have access to 100% of it’s capacity and
bandwidth, and you are not affected by other sites on the
server. On the negative side, you will pay much more for this
sort of service. Depending on the capabilities of the machine
and the software that is loaded on it, you can easily spend well
    over $100 per month.
  • Rack Space – Leasing rack space
provides web site owners with the maximum level of flexibility
and security by allowing site owners to purchase whatever
hardware and software is appropriate. On the other hand, you are
responsible for purchasing, installing and maintaining your own
server. If your server goes down in the middle of the night, the
hosting staff will generally reboot the machine for you (for a
fee), but you will be responsible for making sure everything is
working correctly. Web servers can easily cost $10,000 for
hardware and software, plus you will have additional fees from
your hosting company for bandwidth and other services. This sort
of option makes the most sense for companies getting thousands
of hits per day, or for those that require highly specialized
server-side applications that must be custom configured.

  • On-Site Hosting – By far the most expensive option, on-site
hosting requires that you are very familiar with maintaining web
servers and are available to fix problems 24 hours per day and
365 days per year. With this option, you are your own hosting
company, and you pay not only for the server(s), software, and
technical support, but also for T1 lines, DNS services and other
complex issues that are generally out of reach for small
start-up businesses. The most compelling reason to host your own
website is for security reasons. Sites such as transaction
processing companies, online banks, or other online services
that need to be able to audit their security measures for one
reason or another generally choose this option.

Some web-hosting companies will handle mapping your domain name
to their servers, while others will instruct you on how to do it
yourself.

In conclusion, you can get a website up and running for as
little as $60 per year. The more bandwidth (website traffic) you
require, the more you are going to pay. You will also pay more
for higher levels of service, support, and software. You should
make sure your web host supports your development software and
any server technologies you are using. In addition, highly
specialized sites, sites with large amounts of traffic, and
those required to maintain certain security standards may
warrant dedicated servers that cost more than shared hosting

Controlling Search Engines with Robots.txt

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Introduction

As mentioned in previous articles, search engines can be great source of traffic to a standard business or personal website. What would happen though, if you didn’t want to appear in them?

This is the purpose of robots.txt files.

While they generally do not help you get listed, they can help ensure that you don’t get listed if you wish not to be. What is a robot?

A robot (also shortened to just “bot”, or called a spider) is a computer that goes around collecting information from websites.

Different bots do different things, depending on the owners reasons for having them. In the case of search engines, the robots purpose is to collect information about what your site contains ready for it to be included in the search engine. So where does the robots.txt file fit in?

Search engines generally like to respect the owners of websites. Most like to provide people the option of not including some or all of their pages on their site in the search engine. The robots.txt file is used for telling them.

Before the bot goes around your site looking at the various pages you have, it will take a look inside your robots.txt file first to see if it is allowed to.

If the bot doesn’t find a robots.txt file, or the file is blank, it will normally assume you don’t want any robot blocked and feel free to roam around your site. So how do I control where it can go?

Robots.txt files can either specify individual robots to restrict, or cover them all with the one command.

Commands for robots consist of two parts:

* User-agent: used for the name of the robot to control * Disallow: where they are banned from accessing

In the example below, we would block robots called googlebot from accessing greentree.html. Googlebot is the name of Google’s search engine robot, and by blocking it from this page we would remove it from Google next time they update their results.

User-agent: googlebot Disallow: greentree.html

While this works great for that individual page, what if we wanted to block it from all pages? It would be highly inefficient to list every page on your site as blocked, but we could do:

User-agent: googlebot Disallow: greentree.html Disallow: /frogs/

The above code would block googlebot from accessing greentree.html and every page in the frogs directory.

Still the whole site would not be blocked, but we have already reduced the areas that can be seen significantly. To block the whole site we disallow the “/” directory. This “/” directory is absolutely everything on the site.

For example:

User-agent: googlebot Disallow: /

You now have the ability to block as many bots as you like by naming each one individually down the file. In the case below we have banned googlebot and slurp (the name of Yahoo’s robot) from the site.

User-agent: googlebot Disallow: /

User-agent: slurp Disallow: /

Finally, if the same rules apply to all bots we can specify them with the “*” character instead.

User-agent: * Disallow: /

Finally, it is worth mentioning that while almost every bot likes to play nicely with the websites it visits, there are some that do not. If you have pages that really shouldn’t be seen my any sort of robot, then perhaps you should use a method of password protecting them.

The Use of MySpace in a Court of Law

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

The Toms River Bureau1 reports that the defense attorney for a man accused of molesting a girl wants the girl’s MySpace revelation that she is a liar to be submitted before the court. Defense attorneys David Schlendorf and Veronica Norgaard for the 78 year old accused man, Albert Mandycz are attempting to bring before the jury evidence that the girl admitted on MySpace that she “is the best liar you will ever meet”. Essentially, the defense attorneys are trying to discredit the girl’s evidence that she was molested between the ages of 5 and 8. Laura Pierro, Assistant Orange County Prosecutor is attempting to exclude such evidence on the grounds that it will be difficult to prove that the MySpace allegation was actually made by her and secondly that the MySpace allegation has not been altered in any way. Superior Court Judge Francis Hodgson has yet to decide whether to allow such evidence to be presented before the jury. Purely on a theoretical basis, I see no reason why the courts should not allow such evidence to be admitted. The court presently admits a wide range of evidence such as mobile text messages and tapped telephone conversations. Thus, as a matter of principle the courts would not be overextending their powers by allowing written evidence from MySpace. What is problematic however is that MySpace is not a secure site in the sense that it is easy for someone to hack into someone else’s MySpace account or to alter the MySpace layouts with the permission of the user. But the primary issue is not whether the court can allow information written on a social networking site but the weight which the court places on such evidence. It would not be difficult for the prosecutor to argue that the girl’s revelation that she is the “world’s best liar” is not necessarily true. Similarly, it is not be difficult to argue that such a revelation does not mean that she lied about the molestation accusations. However, such evidence does not need to be substantiated in order for it to become a dangerous weapon in the hands of the jury. The girl’s revelation makes her a less creditable victim in the eyes of the jury, particularly in light of the fact that the girl was allegedly molested the ages of 5 and 8. Thus, even if the evidence was purely circumstantial, such evidence would weigh heavily upon the thoughts of the jurors. What is a little frightening about this case, is that if the MySpace evidence were to be accepted by the courts, it would appear that no aspect of one’s life is private in a court of law. Such circumstantial character evidence should not be as valid as actual written or verbal evidence. Ultimately, the courts need to be wary of allowing new technological evidence.

Ways to Get Cheaper Auto Insurance

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

With sky-rocketing insurance premiums, intelligent car owners everywhere are looking for ways to get cheap car insurance. And why not? If it can put cash back into your pocket then go for it, right? Well, there are many ways to get price reductions on car insurance. Try to check if you or your car is eligible for the following deductions but remember that these are general price reductions, you have to inquire with your automobile insurance agent if they offer them.

Individual-Associated Discounts

Person-related discounts are ones that depend on the driver’s own personal situation, status and driving history.

  • Going to Traffic School If by any chance you have received a speeding ticket, you may attend traffic school either online or through a traditional setting to have your ticket expunged from your driving record. Indirectly, this will have an effect of lowering your yearly insurance costs
  • Good Student deductions. Insurers know that students with higher GPAs have a lower risk of being involved in a car accident. Therefore, they will usually offer price reductions on your insurance.
  • Professional Credits. Some agents offer deductions if they belong to certain organizations or profession, like engineers, doctors etc.
  • Senior Citizen Discount. If youre a mature driver, aged 55 or over and have completed a Defensive Driving course being offered by the DMV in your state, then you may qualify for a discount.
  • Loyalty Credits. If you’ve been a loyal, solid, long-standing client of your insurance underwriter, they may reward your business with price reductions too.
  • Keep a Clean Driving Record. If you’ve not been involved in any car accidents or have had any tickets for traffic violations, you should be able to get your insurance costs reduced.
  • Multi-line Insurance Discount. If you have more than one type of insurance policy with the same insurance underwriter, many times you’ll also be able to get better insurance rates from them.
  • Vehicle Based Insurance Deductions

Your car is a huge factor in shaping how much you’ll be giving for auto insurance. Depending on the overall safety and other features of your car, you can pay more or less for auto insurance.

    1. Air Bags. They present an added safety feature to your car and insurance firms love these.
    2. Anti-Lock Brakes System (ABS). Many automobiles on the road today are equipped with ABS. Many insurance agents offer discounts if your car is fitted with this type of braking system and many states even require the insurance agent to do so.
    3. Anti-Theft Devices. Any type of add-on to dissuade some person from breaking into or stealing your car can also provide you with lower automobile insurance costs.
