Newbie Business Building and Information Overload – What Can You do About It?

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Information overload is something that will happen to all of us at one time or the other. Net Newbies, in particular, are prime targets for that terrible affliction. The incredible variety of ads and come-ons assaulting the Newbie is frightening just by the sheer number!

All the marketers want you to sign-up for a seminar or a promotion. Your email inboxes are straining to hold all the correspondence telling you that unless you buy this or that system or utility, you’ll be left hopelessly behind; heck, you’ve lost the race before it even started!

All the above, of course, while you are just fumbling around doing your best to understand the basics and snag onto a set of guiding principles. It’s enough to make perfectly sane Newbies fling their arms, pull their hair and throw their computer out the window! However, is there an antidote, a way to minimize or stop it? Read on and I will show you how to spell relief from your information congestion.

The strongest defense against information overload is a special kind of knowledge. What I’m talking about is the type of knowledge that comes from a deep investigation of sound business principles. As you spend weeks and months contemplating setting up your Net business, ask yourself what are the basics of business. It doesn’t matter if it’s a brick and mortar or Net business.

Grab a pen and paper and make a point by point outline of what you consider to be essential business principles. Double check the above list against established sources; there might be an item you left out. The list has now become YOUR list; not a list somebody else handed you. Take a look at this article and see if it helps: http://www.newbie-business-guide.com/tested_business_principles.h tm

Continue to meditate upon the above subject and welcome it onto yourself; have the knowledge become a part of you, feel it in your gut! Only a very complete study of basic business principles will set you free from information overload. In your quiet moments, dwell upon it and become one with it.

Dig deep into all areas dealing with creating and maintaining an ongoing business. Look into Web building, advertising and promotion. Be leery of concepts that are vague or unclear. Should you run into the words “new business model,” head for the door as fast as you can!

Always remember that you don’t want to re-invent the wheel, you just want to have a very good understanding of how it works. You are not trying to break new ground but to understand the well worn steps traveled by others before you.

Don’t attach a personal judgment to some of the sales literature since there is a reason for that weed to grow. Commercial copywriting should be a main subject of study, no matter what your personal viewpoint.

As time goes by, you’ll begin to feel a new courage that is gained by the convictions of your studies. As you read many of the ads offered, you’ll have a guiding principle in your mind and in your gut. No longer will you be like a leaf, blown about by a merciless wind! You have the power of knowledge to guide you!

As you surf the Web, make a list of sites that you like. I’m talking about particular sites associated with starting and building your Net business. You’ll recognize them instantly because their writing will be clearheaded and to the point. Their articles will be in favor of the reader with very little heavy handed sales copy. When the need arises, go there and drink deeply from the well.

All the above should contribute greatly to help you find your center; you won’t be fumbling around in the dark anymore. When you run into the next me-too fad to hit the web and it rears its ugly head to look at you, you’ll know exactly what to do. It’s a good thing and I welcome you to the peace of mind of your new home.

How to Make your Content Management System / Web Portal more secure durring setup.

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

Most people who use a CMS/Portal do so because they are very simple to setup. A web site in a box so to speak. What 99% of the users dont know is that there are ways to make it more secure and less likely to be hacked durring the install process! What i am going to explain here is the simple change one can make durring the install to help keep the database secure! I will be using PostNuke CMS/Portal as my example!

Most people take for granted that the information preloaded in the database setup screen is there and should not be changed. Well the example here is the Database Table Prefix. For Postnuke and PHP-Nuke they come with a default setting of “nuke”. When setting up these settings you should follow your host’s information as far as database host, user name, password, and database name are concerned. On the issue of the database table prefix you can and should change it from “nuke” to anything you like.

An example of a good database table prefix is alpha-numeric. “If for example your first name is Eric and you want to use that as your database table prefix i would use “3r!c”, or if it were Amanda and you want to use that “4m4nd4″”. You can use anything you really want for the prefix but for a more secure database dont use the default “nuke”, or whatever default setting comes with the CMS/Portal you decide to use!

How To Reduce Web Hosting Bandwidth

How To Reduce Web Hosting Bandwidth Copyright 2002 by Herman Drost

You just received a higher than normal monthly bill on your credit card for web hosting. Your hosting company explains that you exceeded your monthly minimum for “bandwidth usage” and suggests reducing the size of your web site files.

What is bandwidth usage? What does bandwidth mean? How much bandwidth do you need? How can you reduce bandwidth usage?

Let’s discuss each of these topics in more depth.

What is “bandwidth usage?” This refers to the total amount of information that has been served to your web site visitors each month. Every file on your Web Site has a specific size (e.g. 22K). Every time a visitor downloads that file, your bandwidth usage goes up by that amount.

The larger the file, the higher the bandwidth usage when it is downloaded. The more traffic to your site, the more bandwidth you will use.

What does “bandwidth” mean? Bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be transmitted in a fixed amount of time. The “data transfer rate” is the speed with which data can be transmitted from one device to another. Data rates are often measured in megabits (million bits) or megabytes (million bytes) per second. These are usually abbreviated as Mbps and Mbps, respectively.

Bits and Bytes 8 bits = 1 byte. 1,024 bytes = 1 kilobyte (Kb). 1,024 kilobytes (Kb) = 1 megabyte (mb or meg) 1,024 megabytes = 1 gigabyte (gb or gig)

How much bandwidth do I need? To determine how much bandwidth you need, estimate the file size of each web page, and then multiply it by the number of pages on your web site.

Multiply this figure by the number of the number of page views you expect per month from your site.

For example, if your web page consists of two 15Kb images and 3Kb of html, you would have 33Kb of data for that page. Now multiply this by the number of page views you expect to have per month (e.g. 100,000 per month). This would mean 3.3Gb of data needs to be transferred per month for that page.

Now recalculate this number for each page, and you’ll know approximately how much bandwidth your entire site requires.

How can you reduce bandwidth usage? The easy way is to reduce the size of the files on your site, particularly images and other graphics. For example, you have a large image (i.e. 200KB) on your web page that is downloaded by each visitor every time the page is requested. If you reduce this image to 20KB or remove it altogether, it will dramatically cut your bandwidth usage. It will also speed up your site’s performance.

For more information on optimizing images for the Web, read my article, “Preparing Images for Your Web Site”, (www.isitebuild.com/imageoptimization2).

Web Sites that have MP3s to download, movies, music playing in the background and large images, will obviously have a higher bandwidth. Large web sites or sites that expect a lot of traffic, will also use a lot.

If your site has mainly html pages and small images, your bandwidth will not be that high.

Bandwidth Tools Monitoring bandwidth http://www.utoronto.ca/ucres/netup.htm

Web Page Checker http://www.searchengineworld.com/cgi-bin/page_size.cgi

Tuning up your Web Site http://websitegarage.netscape.com/

Bandwidth Tips If you make changes to your site by adding more files and/or web pages, recalculate your web site file size.

Estimate how many visitors will be accessing your web pages over the next few months.

Recalculate the bandwidth usage for your site. You may need more web space and bandwidth for your site to function effectively.

Check with your web hosting company to upgrade your hosting plan.

Conclusion Now you can avoid the shock of exceeding your monthly bandwidth usage and paying higher hosting fees. You are now ready to receive more traffic to your site and therefore make more sales. ===========================================================

Inkjet printers replacing traditional screen printing

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

Printing into garments has been an age-old process that people have been doing many years before it had become widespread. The process is long and complicated and needs expertise to be able to achieve the right result.

With the development in technology came the process of sublimation, which paved the way to transferring decorations in garments. This is simpler compared to the traditional direct screen printing. Just like the traditional screen printing, sublimation transfers have been done before people printing companies came to know about its possibility. This has given people another option in decorating variety of products in full colors and in small amounts.

With the use of inkjet printers as screen printing methods comes another addition to the transfer of prints into garments. The fact that this method has been proven as much more effective and result-oriented than the traditional and sublimation process has made people wonder if this will be able to replace those other methods in the long run.

Printing on garments using these printers is less time consuming as the only process involved here is the loading of the materials needed. With inkjet, full colored prints are printed in a matter of minutes, from the start until finish. This is just like putting graphics into prints, without the use of paper. The cost involved in this process is not as expensive as that of the sublimation and the direct screen printing. Inkjet printers can be considered competitive garment printers with only the cost of the initial printer cost to take into account.

Inkjet printing on garments may have its advantages but it also has its many disadvantages. It is only practical on light colored garments. Because of the transparency of these printers, they have the tendency to take on the color of the garment. It is therefore ideal printing them on light colored garments. The amounts of prints that will be made are also an advantage over the others as these printers have low production rates. But if you take the set up preparations and the procedures needed for the sublimation and traditional printing, the slower time rate of the inkjet printers would surely beat the preparation periods of the others.

With more additions to the screen printing technology, people will be questioning the fact that maybe the traditional printing would be replaced as time goes on. The manufacturers of inkjet printers would surely be able to develop its disadvantages to work on its advantages.

Is this the future of screen printing?

404 page not found – a marketing secret

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Here’s a cheap magic trick for you – I bet you I can guess the answer you will give to the following question:

What do you usually do when you click on a link or button and get the classic “404 File Not Found” page?

1. You click on the “Back” button of your browser (with disgust) and go somewhere else?

2. You look at the address field and erase the text right until the next “slash” and try again?

3. You look at the address field and try the domain name, hoping to get to a home page and navigate your way to the right place?

4. You try to figure out if something is misspelled or if the link is just broken and try to type what you think to be the correct address?

5. You call Mel, your tech support guy and yell “my internet is not working again”?

6. You immediately find the contact information for the webmaster of the site and inform them of the situation?

7. You hack into the server hosting the site and fix the broken link yourself, leaving a “Ralph was here” message?

Let me guess, if you are like most “normal” citizens, always rushing somewhere, with a cup of bad tasting and very hot coffee in one hand and nervously moving the mouse with the other hand, annoyed that you threw away that mouse pad and now your “optical” mouse is all jittery – then…. the answer is no. 1.

You will simply click back and try another place. In fact, the vast majority of people will not even think about the fact that there just might be other alternatives.

Bottom line is – if you have a website and you care about attracting visitors, you must do something so that you do not lose that group of people who come to your site by following an old link or by typing your URL incorrectly.

For some strange reason, it became embedded into our minds that the “404 File Not Found” page is the equivalent of rejection, dispair, negative energy, in other words, it’s just bad karma. If you get a “404 File Not Found” you just have to turn around, run as fast as you can and never look back.

This is one of those ubiquitous anomalies that people stop questioning – but of course, that’s how it is. I don’t believe that. I thing everything can be changed, habits can be altered, ultimately it’s all about perception, it’s about that image that we create in our mind and store somewhere into a memory cell.

So what can be done to a “404 File Not Found”? Is this article actually going to talk about anything useful?

Well, since the perception we all have about the “404 File Not Found” is that all things are broken, and since we can’t change the actual fact that browsers display that page when things are bad, then why not change the image of that page? Why not put a more humane face there?

Those error messages were designed many years ago to be simple, cryptic and easily interpreted by machines. Everything else evolved, except that.

Did you know that it is possible to add HTML to a 404 page? How about a nice message saying “sorry buddy, our link is probably bad but we’re still here, the rest of our site is up, we want you, we’ll help you get through this!!”

The subliminal message I’m trying to pass to you here is that there are so many simple yet not tapped into methods to run a successful online business, by simply making sure you are not losing your potential visitors.

So go ahead and change your error pages.

It is not possible to customize your 404 error page if your web host has not enabled this facility for your website. For example, at the time of this writing, if you host at Geocities or Tripod, you would not be able to customize your 404 Error Page.

Most reputable web hosts, however, will allow you to do so.

If your web host has this facility, you will usually find mention of this somewhere in their documentation. In fact, if they mention somewhere that you can customize a file named “.htaccess”, it probably means that you can also customize your 404 File Not Found error page. Some hosts will offer the feature through their “Control Panel”, some will let you paste HTML code, etc.

Bottom line, just remember this very simple, common sense technique:

A custom 404 error page is really important to the success of your web site. Customize your site’s error messages and you will keep your visitors.

For your reference, here are the most used error codes and their meaning:

400 – This will be reached when the user enters a url that refers to a page that does not exist on your site.

401 – This will be reached when the user has failed to authenticate their self properly when trying to access a restricted page.

403 – This will be reached when access is forbidden to the page the user to trying to access.

404 – This will be reached when a user misspells a url to a page they are trying to access. It is important to be helpful with your 404 error page or the user may decide to leave your site.

500 – This will be reached when the page cannot be displayed. This can occur when a script fails to run, or under other circumstances. You should have the user contact the site administrator when this page is shown.

Invest in Your Child’s Future by Choosing a Scottish Friendly Child Bond

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Children reach adulthood in no time which means it is critical to start thinking about saving when they’re young. By saving from just £10 to £25 a month with Scottish Friendly’s child bond without delay you could make all the difference when they are older. For example helping to pay for university fees or to find the money for a first home.

You can save tax-free for any child with a Scottish Friendly Child Bond. It’s tax-free because it’s a friendly society savings plan, so under present legislation it grows free of income or capital gains tax. It is a marvelous way for parents, grandparents, family members and friends to make a huge financial difference when the little ones are older.

In essence the Child Bond is a with-profits investment plan: It invests for long-term growth as well as a degree of security, in stocks and shares, fixed interest funds and cash

Funds accumulates through the addition of potential annual bonuses and at the point where the bond matures there is a tax-free payout. The value of bonuses is dependent on how much profit we make and how we distribute it. Please note that bonuses are not guaranteed.

The Child Bond lasts for a minimum of ten years, but it is possible to invest for longer should you like – perhaps to coincide with an 18th or 21st birthday. You can save either monthly, annually or with a lump sum payment. It is completely up to you. Please note if the plan is cashed in prior to the end of the term, the amount the child will get back may be less than the amount paid in.

If you select the monthly option, you can begin saving from as little as £10 a month – up to a maximum of £25 monthly. Or you can make annual payments of up to £270 a year.

You can also pay all of the premiums in one go through our lump sum funding plan. If you invest the maximum sum of £2,340 for a 10 year period, this actually invests £270 a year into the Child Bond – a total of £2,700. The minimum lump sum of £1,040 provides £120 a year for 10 years – a total of £1,200. This provides a means for you to pay all your premiums in one go and is particularly popular with grandparents who like the reassurance of knowing all premiums for the full term of the plan are taken care of.

Life cover is also included with this plan so you should consider if this is suitable for your financial needs.
