Has Your Design Firm Run Amuck With Your Web Site?

Monday, September 8th, 2008

What’s happening to good web site design? Somehow we creative types at interactive and traditional ad agencies have run amuck – we’re building web sites that may dazzle the senses, but don’t really communicate much about our client’s business or products and services!

1. Somehow I don’t think anyone has a burning desire to spend 30-60 seconds on the Index page of a web site while another fancy Flash animation loads, complete with snazzy graphics, audio, and way cool cutting edge graphics – not!! People want to get real information, not razzle-dazzle graphics showing how great a developer is using the latest whiz bang technology!

2. I thought Frames went out of style like adding a .com to your company’s name. Apparently not, as there are still lots of web sites using Frames – forcing users to see a web site with mix and match (bad) graphics, odd menus and just a plain ugly interface.

3. I some times wonder if some of my fellow design geeks all own Adobe stock, or they are just trying to make sure HTML disappears as a content standard. The last thing many people want is to sit and watch as their 56 kbps dial up struggles with opening a doc in Adobe’s proprietary PDF format – many click off and are gone to the next web site. Content should be offered in HTML or Word format, both of which open instantly – no, I don’t own any Microsoft shares!

4. Another popular time waster appears to be designing web sites that require people to list all of their contact points, including first born children, their dog’s pedigree – etc. Registration forms should be short and no more than 4-5 entries that just require fundamental contact information.

5. What’s the value in running contests, games and other technology-enabled multimedia content on a web site? Recent studies have indicated most of the online user community isn’t interested in a web site that drives branding – they simply want information about a company’s goods and services.

6. The web is a wonderful medium for customer acquisition but it also works as a valuable tool for building dialogue with customers – approx 75% of the online community does not mind filling out short forms that ask them questions about goods and services, or providing feedback. More sites should ask people for their opinions and reviews – they don’t mind sharing them and these comments provide valuable insight.

7. Content is still one of, if not the most important variables in good web site design. Today’s savvy surfer doesn’t want content presented in book form; they want short paragraphs with lots of white space, not long textual columns in a type font that forces anyone over 30 (perish the thought there are people on the web over 30) to put on their glasses and squint at the screen.

8. We marketing types jumped on the community bandwagon 12-18 months back – you couldn’t read an article about web site marketing unless “community” wasn’t included as a buzzword du jour! Well, times have changed, or maybe we all came to our senses – today’s web user wants baseline information they don’t want to chat with other users via web site or read about shared interests – give them information in “content bytes’ and let AOL worry about building a community!

Flash Web Design – The Wave of the Future?

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

There are two camps when it comes to flash web design, those who believe it is the wave of the future and those who do not. To decide which camp you want to be part of, you of course need to learn a little bit about flash web design and try it out as well to see how you feel. The following overview on flash web design should help you form at least a basic opinion about flash web design and whether it is here to stay or not.

However, the real truth for flash is not if it is the wave of the future or not, but if it is the wave of the future for particular websites that could benefit from it. The wide variety of websites show that flash is good for some, horrible for others. Whether or not it will be good for you lies in your website and what you are trying to accomplish. Read the good and the bad of flash below, and then make your own decision.

Some of the Bad

- The back button often times does not work which many people really dislike. In addition to this, links do not change color so you cannot keep track of which links you have visited and which links you have not meaning you will return to the same page frequently and waste time.

- Not every computer has flash, so if you visit a website that is based on flash it will ask you to download a plug in. Most surfers are apprehensive about downloading anything from the web they are not sure of, and as a result won’t download it and be able to access your site. Obviously, this results in you losing visitors and in the long run… additional customers.

- Intros that involve Flash are seen as a huge waste of time by most web visitors. They take a long time to download, especially if your visitor does not have a fast connection. While the content is loading, a visitor often heads to a different site especially if you do not allow them to skip the intro.

Some of the Good

- Flash can give you a site that is more interactive than HTML and one that can download just as quick and sometimes quicker, not to mention a better viewing experience.

- Flash is consistent. This means that whether you are on a PC or Mac, use Internet Explorer or Netscape, regardless of age, the image you see will be the same. This is not the case for HTML which looks different on all platforms.

As with every other type of technology, if Flash is the future people will embrace it and grow accustomed to it. We’ll see exactly what the future holds for flash technology.

5 Big Design Mistakes – How NOT to kill your buisness

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

The first thing you should remember when creating a web page: MAKE IT EASY TO NAVIGATE! No one will give two pennys on your super designed site if they cannot find what they need! Create a site so that it will combine design and usability! I have made a list of what I consider to be the worlds biggest web-page design mistakes. Look at this mistakes and learn from them!

I.Stupid, useless and annoying elements that don’t let the visitor find what they want. 1.STUPID SPLASH PAGE. Ok, maybe you will say that a splash page(if it is well done) could look cool. Yes it could. But think of the visitor’s time. That splash page takes often more time than it should. You could actually kill your sales. What do you think that a potential customer would prefer? To stay and look hours at your splash page or to go and buy the product that he wants so much? When you create a site, try to think more at the potential customer than how to expose your flash-creator skills. They don’t care about you, they care about themselves!

2.APPLETS AND PLUGINS. Use them ONLY if you really need them. Not just to spice up your website. Again, think again more at the visitor. Maybe they haven’t got a certain plugin and your content will not work. Then, your website is useless and the potential customer goes to the competition. Now that’s really cool.

II.Thinking at Internet Explorer as the supreme ruler Any professional-made website should be compatible with any internet browser. This is a rule. Always check your website to be friendly with all major browsers: Opera, Firefox, IE. Don’t send your visitors to the competition just because they don’t use IE.

III.Stupid navigation. A thing that any webmaster should do: Spend hours and hours thinking how to simplify the navigation! Of course I’m jocking but when the site is created one of the first question you should ask yourself: “Is this site easy enough to navigate?” If your answer is no, then is bad. Really really bad. The visitor should be able to know at any time where in your website he is. He should know in just a few seconds how to reach the information he needs!

IV.To much information on one page Structure the information. DO NOT put everything on just one page. Do not put to many menus on the page. Try not to kill the visitors eyes. Try to keep a easy to read layout. Most of the visitors hate to scroll.

V.Text Do not use small texts. Why there are so many sites on the Internet with texts of such a small size? I have no idea. I tell you again: kepp your webpage easy to read. Use texts big enough so that the visitor can see what you are trying to tell him through the page.
