Gaming Laptops Becoming Household Electronics

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

I recall a time where laptops for gaming were a specialist thing. I pretty much doubt they sold in any noteworthy quantities but they certainly generated tons of revenue for the resellers. I reckon numerous people would agree they always desired a laptop for gaming but it was just out of reach for the majority. I reckon they weren’t the most practical but I still believe they were the best laptop computers. I know we all got thrilled about them but the large number of us would highly unlikely buy laptop computers that were so expensive. The outlook for gaming notebooks is now seen by the big brands as an unmissable opportunity for them.

In comparison to the littler resellers these companies know they can get even more markup. These manufacturers have probably been losing a bit of money on entry level systems so this should be an attractive opportunity. Why would people buy laptop computers like this? I guess big manufacturers have the marketing budgets to educate them on that. In my view this could really ruin littler resellers if they do not separate their unique proposition. I express this due to the fact that the technology which was once special and high priced is now becoming standard. Littler system builders cannot actually use a brand name like the larger competitors can.

The hype being generated regarding the latest branded gaming notebooks is making people perceive them as being the best laptop computers in history. This is in fact the prime competitive edge left for the unestablished retailers. Choosing the spec is something all the enthusiasts like. Usually this kind of prospect is in the know in regards to the tech specs and can effortlessly compare configurations. For these sort of buyers, the technical aspects of a computer normally mean more than the looks of it. As a likely consumer myself this is in fact all a beneficial thing for me. It will induce prices to fall and make high end technology low priced for everybody. Even though I say that, I’m not actually certain of my predictions. Mobile technology is continuously advancing and the latest laptops will typically be pricey on launch. The global companies have already launched their own gaming laptop range, so all we can do now is sit back and observe.

Cyber-shot® Point & Shoot The perfect cameras for snapshot

Representing the next level of digital still photography, Sony’s DSC-F828 Cyber-shot® is the first consumer camera to incorporate four-color filter CCD technology and a Real Imaging Processor. These new components are integral in capturing color accuracy closest to what the human eye can see, setting a new benchmark in camera performance.

The new (RGB+E) filter adds an emerald-colored pixel to the filter pattern, realizing color fidelity that is closer to human color perception. Photographers will notice an extraordinarily life-like rendering of blue, blue-green and red hues.

The Real Imaging Processor delivers increased speed with lower power consumption, enabling the F828 to capture an eight-megapixel image in almost half the time required by typical five-megapixel cameras! New manual controls, coupled with Carl Zeiss® T* optics, gives advanced photographers a broader range of mechanisms to determine focus, exposure and recording modes.

Images can be stored onto CompactFlash® Type I and Type II media, as well as a Microdrive® hard disk drive or Memory Stick PRO media. The Cyber-shot F828 truly embodies a premier imaging experience.

The Benefits of, Well, Benefits

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

Let’s face iteven though most of us aren’t prowling used car lots wearing plaid polyester leisure suits, we’re all in the sales business. Whether you’re trying to persuade lawmakers to pass legislation favorable to your company, hoping to soften the blow of an unpopular personnel policy or launching a new teen-driver safety initiative, you’re selling.

And as all advertising prosespecially those in direct-response marketingwill tell us, you’ve got to tailor your sales messages to emphasize benefits over features. People will buyor buy intoyour product or your message when they’re emotionally convinced that it will improve their lives or protect their assets, family, or health. It’s OK to mention featuresa bill’s particulars, a product’s warranty, a campaign’s dollar goalbut they must be tied to benefits or your prospect won’t be moved to take action.

Sounds simple, right? “The new Ecologica XYZ wagon will allow you to buy 3 times more Birkenstocks and enjoy two soy lattes every day with your $2,500 in annual gas savings” is a benefits-oriented statement. “The new Ecologica XYZ gets 79/mpg highway and 69/mpg city” is a features-oriented statement because it doesn’t tell you how that gas-mileage information will improve your life. But you’d be surprised by how many seasoned communication/advertising pros focus exclusively on features.

Case in point: A friend was recently working on marketing collateral for a medium-sized business. The key contact at the business was excited about the company’s new state-of-the art phone and computer system, and wanted to devote a whole page to glowing descriptions of them. My friend asked the client how the new infrastructure actually benefited their clients or prospects. “Well, it’s important to us and we’re really proud of it, so we want it in there,” the client countered. Happily, my friend was able to convince the company to include a benefit with each feature they mentionedi.e., how the new super-powerful system would mean that customers would be served even faster than before, etc. Anything else would just be vanity.

So vet each piece of copy you turn out to see if it passes the benefits-vs.-features test. A good rule of thumb: If a sentence begins with “we” or “our,” it’s probably emphasizing a feature; “you” statements tend to be more benefit-oriented. If you don’t, your audience will go, “What’s in it for me” instead of “Take my money, please!” or “How do I sign up?”

It Takes More Than Money To Motivate Team Members

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Team Building Question:

How do you treat team members who have reached the salary bar and cannot be promoted to the next level just yet? What do you do to keep them motivated?

The Team Doc Says…

This happens in many organizations due to the workforce getting older and maintaining a large number of veteran team members in the mix.

Take the focus off money. It’s a motivator, but short term. Take a look at what the team member values and see what you can do to provide motivation to accommodate those values.

One thing you can do right now is to understand how each team member perceives their fit in your organization. You can find out how your employees feel by asking them:

  • What do you find most challenging about your work?
  • What aspect of your work provides the most satisfaction?
  • What are the biggest obstacles to completing your work?
  • What resources would make your work easier?

Finding the answers to these questions can help you in nailing down just the right motivational tactic to keep each team member on the right track. Then create action plans to maintain team member involvement in the growth process.

Another option is tapping into the knowledge base of your maturing workforce. One thing you don’t want to happen is to let all that knowledge walk out the door when mature team members leave. Consider implementing a “buddy” or mentoring system where mature team members have an opportunity to take a younger team member under their wing and share the intellectual capital in their head. This technique is a win /win for everyone — the mature team member gets to share all that great information he’s stored up for years, the younger team member benefits from a master and the company gets a better employee.

5 Minute Training – Running at Your Horse

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

I want to make my horses as safe as possible in a variety of situations. Therefore I try to expose them to as many situations as possible. Although I would never advocate approaching your horse at a full sprint I think there are good reasons to let your horse get some experience around fast moving objects. For example, I was leading a couple of yearlings to my arena. I just walked through the gate and was heading for a holding stall next to the arena. For some reason after my daughter walked through the gate she decided to run towards my horses approaching them from behind. She was well out of the way from their hind legs but one of the horses spooked, which spooked the other and they both started to run. I was just about stepped on by one of the horses. This situation could have caused someone, me, to get hurt.

My first option was to blame my daughter and tell her never to do that. While I did discuss with her why she shouldn’t run up to a horse from any angle, I also realized that this was a situation that could have happened anywhere and will most likely happen again. In fact, it could have been many things that would have caused the horse to spook. It could have been a dog, a paper sack in the wind, a motorcycle or a person running down the sidewalk at a parade, really anything moving toward the horse at a pace faster than a walk. So, I guess I better get the horse conditioned to people running up to it. I don’t want to dull the horse so that they do not react to anything. I just don’t want the horse’s first reaction to be “RUN.” The goal is to get the horse to think about the situations before they react.

Start with a walk

Eventually I will train the horse to stay calm and relaxed as I run at him from any angle, ride a motorized vehicle around him, run by him with flags, etc. But to start, I will use a simple 5 minute exercise during feeding. When I go out to feed my young horses I will pet them on their head, back side, etc. Once they are calm I will then walk about 5 steps away from them, stop, turn and walk back towards them. I do this at a speed which might make them a bit uncomfortable but not enough to make them run. You have to use your judgment and read the horse. If you are unsure, start on the slow side and work your way up. Once I reach the horse I pet their head, back, etc. I repeat this about 8-10 times trying to increase my speed gradually. Remember, I do this when I feed my horses. I will be able to repeat this procedure many times each week, so I am not in a hurry to be able to run at the horse the first or second day. I will also change the angle which I approach my horse. I will walk at him from the side, at a 45 degree angle, etc. I also want to mention that I do not stare at my horse’s eyes when I approach. I look toward the ground, near his feet and do not assume an aggressive posture. I want to approach the horse but I do not want them to feel like I am going to eat them.

Conclusion

Eventually, you will be able to stare your horse in the face and run directly at him and the horse will stay calm and relaxed because they have thought about the situation and concluded that they are not going to die. Working with young horses in this way will help to prepare them for the regular ground work sessions and help them progress more rapidly.
